Kathy has been implementing transformative changes in health care for more than 25 years, initially as a registered nurse focused on pediatrics, cardiac critical care and outcomes measurement, and since 2017 leading an array of high-value transformation efforts for the Value Institute for Health and Care at the University of Texas at Austin. Kathy’s pioneering work in understanding patient and family needs has spanned extensive use of the Experience Group research methodology, journey mapping, and most recently, a Photovoice Project showcasing the lived experience of caregivers of children with complex medical needs. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, Kathy brought together an innovative team who partnered with patients, families, and clinicians to implement health outcome measurement programs for a variety of conditions at Texas Children’s Hospital.
Kathy brings energy and passion to her teaching because she believes education in high-value health care is essential to advancing its implementation. She enjoys facilitating learning amongst professionals in the field who are transforming health care systems and improve the outcomes that matter most. Students enjoy her ability to connect concepts discussed in roundtables to her own experiences trying to implement health care system change. Kathy is a recipient of the Susan M. Cox, M.D. Teaching Excellence award from the Dell Medical School, as well as the recipient of awards both in health innovation and nursing.
“I’m excited to see you in the roundtables as we explore key concepts and frameworks for how to measure the outcomes that matter to patients and families and discuss how to design solutions responsive to those outcomes! We will analyze these ideas in the context of your professional environment and see what learnings we can share.”
