WHY: The Strategic Agenda
Dr. Christina R. Åkerman is President of ICHOM. Between 2008 and 2014, she served as Director General for the Medical Products Agency (MPA) in Sweden, a national agency employing approximately 750 people and under the aegis of the Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. During this period, she was also a Member of the Board of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which is responsible for the scientific evaluation of medicines for use in the European Union. Before her position with MPA, Christina served as Vice President Medical of AstraZeneca Sweden as well as Marketing Company President of AstraZeneca Philippines. She has also been working chair of start-up companies and is currently on the Board of Fouriertransform, a Swedish state-owned venture capital company. Christina received her medical degree from the University of Linköping. She wrote her doctoral thesis in Clinical Physiology and is a specialist in Clinical Pharmacology. She has an Executive MBA in General Management from the Stockholm School of Economics.
Ian Roos was the founding chair of Cancer Voices Victoria and served for four years as Chair of Cancer Voices Australia, that country’s leading cancer consumer organization. Ian also served as a member of the ICHOM Working Groups on Localized Prostate Cancer and Advanced Prostate Cancer.
Edith Schippers has served as the Netherlands’ Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport since 2010. She is a passionate advocate of improving value in health care and a strong believe in the importance of outcomes measurement, nationally and internationally.
HOW: Proof-of-concept
Barbro Fridén, CEO of Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Sweden, one of the largest academic hospitals in Europe, will discuss the transformative impact of outcomes in the university-hospital setting. Dr. Fridén is the former director of the Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital.
Leonique Niessen, Program Director of Santeon, will share her experiences building a nationwide hospital group focused on quality and outcomes. Santeon hospitals collaborate to deliver better care by comparing outcomes. Santeon’s network includes Martini Hospital in the north, Medisch Spectrum Twente and Canisius-Wilhelmina Hospital in the east, Catharina Hospital in the south, Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis in the west, and St. Antonius Hospital in the middle of the Netherlands.
Per Båtelson, Chairman of the Board of the Karolinska Hospital and IVBAR, will discuss his work in value-based reimbursement. Together with Holger Stalberg, he will share how Sweden is making value-based purchasing a reality. Båtelson is also Founder and former CEO of Capio, Europe’s largest multinational hospital provider, and Global Health Partner.
Holger Stalberg is Researcher and Project Manager for the development and implementation of value-based reimbursement in Stockholm County, Sweden. He supported the development of innovative payment models focused on value and will share the insights of this work at the ICHOM Conference.
Caleb Stowell is the Vice President of Research and Development at ICHOM. He joined ICHOM after spending two years as Research Associate and then Senior Health Care Researcher with Professor Michael Porter at the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School. During this time, he contributed to academic articles, case studies, and presentations promoting a value-based approach to health care delivery in the United States and abroad. More recently, he served as the ISC’s primary liaison in launching ICHOM and in November 2012 joined ICHOM full-time to lead its global outcome measure standardization efforts. Caleb received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School.
Jean Stoefs is Vice President of Implementation at ICHOM. Jean joined the Boston Consulting Group in Brussels after completing a Master in Commerce & Engineering at the University of Louvain (UCL) in Belgium. He has worked in many different industries, but kept his focus on health care. He dedicated a significant amount of his BCG career to serving Academic Medical Centers, covering topics such as turnaround, cost reduction, lean and medical strategy. Jean spent 2013 in the Toronto office of BCG. He joined ICHOM in January 2014 to support the deployment of our Standard Sets and to manage the daily operations of our organization.
WHAT: Impact
Nitin Nohria became the tenth dean of Harvard Business School in 2010. He previously served as co-chair of the Leadership Initiative, Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Development, and Head of the Organizational Behavior unit.
Bernard J. Tyson, Chairman and CEO of Kaiser Permanente, speaks about Kaiser's path-breaking work in integrated health care. Tyson has spent nearly three decades at Kaiser, having served previously as president and chief operating officer of the Oakland, California-based organization since 2010.
Rich Lesser is the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Boston Consulting Group. Since joining BCG, Rich’s client work has focused on innovation, strategy, and large-scale transformation in the health care and consumer sectors. In 2009, Consulting magazine named him one of the industry’s Top 25 most influential consultants.
ICHOM Cofounder Michael E. Porter is the Bishop William Lawrence University Professor at Harvard Business School. He is recognized as a global leader in strategy and competition and brings more than two decades of experience developing the value framework, which is described in his book Redefining Health Care.
